Introduction

ADATA is Taiwan’s largest manufacturer of flash storage and DRAM memory for computers. They have been at the forefront of SSD development for many years, bringing us famous SSDs like the SX8200, SX900, and Gammix S70.

XPG is one of ADATA’s sub-brands, and creates products optimized for the needs of gamers.

Today we have for review the ADATA XPG Atom 50, in the 2 TB version. Back in January, I reviewed the 1 TB version and loved the drive for its good performance and affordable pricing. Unfortunately, the Atom 50 then topped out at 1 TB capacity, which was too small for many people. Now ADATA has released a 2 TB version, solving that problem.

What’s surprising though is that ADATA didn’t just use more, or higher capacity NAND flash chips, but also changed the SSD controller. The 2 TB version uses the new SM2269XT from Silicon Motion, whereas the 1 TB version is built using the Innogrit IG5220. The NAND chips are the same 176-layer 3D TLC from Micron on both capacities. As expected, a DRAM cache is not available, for cost reasons. Since the SSD is a 4-channel design, heat output shouldn’t be an issue, ADATA still includes a small heatspreader in the package that users may install if they think their temperatures are too high.

The ADATA XPG Atom 50 comes in capacities of 512 GB ($65), 1 TB ($110) and 2 TB ($200). Endurance for these models is set to 320 TBW, 650 TBW, and 1300 TBW, respectively. ADATA includes a five-year warranty with the Atom 50 SSD.
