Introduction

Today we will be returning once again to the world of small form factor (SFF). With ITX motherboards being the backbone of every SFF build, these small systems generally come in two flavors, typically with little middle ground for compromise, either designed for silent low-power personal computers, similar to an ultra-thin laptop, or maximum performance.

While the more common ATX form factor will be manufactured in up to a dozen different versions per chipset from each vendor, other sizes like E-ATX, M-ATX and ITX form factors may only have a single edition ever released per CPU socket. Which brings us to the release of Intel’s 12th Gen Core processors. New sockets or chipsets mean vendors have the opportunity to refresh their lineups. The Gigabyte Z690I AORUS Ultra Plus DDR4 is a bit different in that regard because it is actually an overhaul of the Z690I AORUS Ultra, which reportedly had PCIe problems and was subsequently discontinued. Gigabyte went into damage control mode and even gone ahead and set up a replacement program for those who bought the previous model. This trade-in program is set to expire in November 2022. While the program will only run for six months it is still worth mentioning that Gigabyte put in the effort to make things right for existing customers.

In today’s review, we will be looking at the Gigabyte Z690I AORUS Ultra Plus DDR4. Gigabyte uses the AORUS naming convention to serve as the company’s gaming-orientated line of Intel and AMD motherboards. These AORUS Z690 branded motherboards come in multiple models comprising of the Pro, Ultra, Elite, Tachyon, Master, and Xtreme, some of which overlap in features and suggested price points.

Packed into the ITX form factor, the Gigabyte Z690I AORUS Ultra Plus DDR4 has a robust VRM deploying ten 105 A power stages. It also includes support for DDR4 and PCIe 5.0-ready solutions. This a great combo for those looking for the newest platform, but also not quite ready to switch over to DDR5, due to cost constraints. Gigabyte didn’t let the ITX form factor get in the way of stuffing the motherboard full of features commonly found on larger motherboards. In this review, we will take a close look at what Gigabyte has to offer the rapidly growing and dedicated SFF community.
