OPPO x nendo is the name of a new generation smartphone prototype that the Chinese OPPO developed in collaboration with the Japanese design studio Nendo. At its base the presence of 4 screens that slide one above the other so as to be folded , with the ‘goal to have a large surface of use available to the user but at the same time compact dimensions once folded.
A sliding phone , we could say, which is positioned as an alternative to the constant growth of the average size of smartphones on the market. At one time smartphones with a screen with a diagonal of more than 5 inches were called phablets, while now a size of 6 inches is almost considered a standard among the models on the market. OPPO x nendo is based on a structure equipped with three hinges, which connect the 4 screens together .
The overall dimensions once closed are comparable to those of a credit card , with obviously a higher thickness. Once opened at the first level a screen is shown, useful for basic information such as time and messages received. At the second opening click, the front camera is activated to be able to take self-portraits, while opening the last level the smartphone is fully extended allowing access to the entire display surface available. There is also a small stylus integrated within the structure of the smartphone, which allows direct interaction with the screens.
It is not known if and when this product will exceed the prototype phase and will be developed into a ready-to-market solution. This is an undoubtedly original and futuristic design but it remains to be understood what the implications will be in terms of usability of use, starting from the user interface up to the hardware integrated into it which must guarantee an adequate level of operating duration with battery.
