Third Point LLC , a hedge fund with a stake in Intel, reportedly contacted company president Omar Ishrak urging him to verify practical actions that may lead to alternative approaches to those required now , in search of a competitiveness that seems to be been lost on the way. Among these it should be noted, as reported by Reuters, also the possibility to separate from the company all its internal production capacity .
A decision of this type, to separate one’s production capacity from the company by making it converge in another entity, would allow Intel to simplify its market action by always turning to external partners (including, of course, the entire structure currently owned by it) for the production of various chips. Not only that: Intel’s manufacturing force could also be better used to build chips for third-party customers, offering them an alternative to manufacturing with TSMC and Samsung.
L’ an American company has already reported that it wants to delegate the production of some of its chips in the roadmap to external partners , so as to leverage the capabilities of these companies and in part overcome the problems related to the transition to nanometer 10 production technology. The transition to this process took place with much longer timescales than initially estimated by the company and with not a few practical implications in terms of roadmap and market offer.
Intel, according to the indications emerged from the letter from Third Point LLC, could therefore diversify its chip design business from that of their production by setting up a joint venture between these two that represent the soul and the current structure. One thinks of what AMD did when it sold its production business, setting up a joint venture with GlobalFoundries from which in the following years it effectively left completely as a corporate shareholding, while maintaining a solid commercial relationship.
Third Point LLC’s request also goes through a detailed analysis of all the acquisitions carried out by Intel over the last few years , so as to understand which ones have led to a successful integration and which ones represent an obstacle or a limit to its future development.
Over the course of 2020 Intel shares fell by approximately 21% , a trend in contrast to the average growth of 43% of the Nasdaq Composite Index for the 2020. However, the intervention of Third Point LLC seems to have shaken the market, with the price of the Intel share which recorded a leap forward of 5% yesterday.
