In the latest financial report released by Activision Blizzard , the company disclosed the results obtained between July and September 2020. The last quarter was important to say the least for the publisher and the credit, in particular, is of the microtransactions : the model introduced in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare has brought huge gains, exceeding the wildest expectations

Gaming and microtransactions: a billionaire business

According to the data collected in the aforementioned report, Activision Blizzard would have grossed the beauty of 1.2 billion dollars from the game. We are talking about an increase of 69% compared to 709 millions earned last year in the same period. Making the news even more relevant is the fact that, in Q3 2020, Activision Blizzard’s total revenues amounted to approximately 1, 95 billions : microtransactions alone therefore represent the 60% of the final sum.

The main architect of this enterprise is Call of Duty: Modern Warfare . Flanked by its battle royale mode (free), the latest installment of the shooter series integrates a digital shop where cosmetic items are sold) of any type: from the skin for our operator to that for the weapon, passing through exclusive designs and decals for Warzone vehicles. Each pack sells for quite high prices, with the rarest bundles costing even more than 20 euro: among these we also find that of Death, a character played by Fabio Rovazzi.

It should be emphasized that in the Activision Blizzard family we also find King, developer of the famous Candy Crash Saga , one of the most played titles ever on Android and iOS, which will certainly have given its contribution with its purchasing system in -app.

Speaking of mobile, it looks like Activision’s upcoming productions won’t stop at microtransactions. As COO Daniel Alegre stated, the publisher plans to bring its most popular franchises to smartphones and tablets. Not just Diablo Immortal, then: one day we might even see a portable version of Starcraft.
