Source: Hardware Luxx added 04th Nov 2020The analysis company Mercury Research recently published figures on the distribution of the x 86 – based CPU market among the largest providers. Above all, AMD stood out with a market share of 22, 4% in the third quarter 2020, which means an increase of almost 6.3 percentage points compared to the previous year and at the same time is the highest value in ten years. The recent presentation of the Ryzen – 5000 – series should promise the group further upswing in the next few months.
The company was particularly successful with notebooks. Especially in the area of cheap APUs for entry-level models, AMD was able to score with a large range and low prices and thus increase its market share 20, expand 2%. That is an increase of 5.5 percentage points compared to the previous year and represents a new all-time high for the company. However, since Intel is also expanding its range of entry-level chips, this trend is likely to weaken again in the medium term, according to Mercury Research.
The The fact that AMD has a market share of in the third quarter 2020 also increased its share, but not with cheap APUs. The concept that applies to notebooks seems to be exactly the opposite here. While AMD scores mainly with high-end chips and thus grabs shares from Intel, Intel was able to increase sales of medium-priced and inexpensive processors.
In the server market, the group can also record profits for itself. The market share of the third quarter 2019 rose from 4.3% to 6.6% within one year compared to the current quarter. Above all, it was possible to buy shares from Intel’s Xeon SP chips. However, Intel was able to increase sales of Intel Atom SoCs significantly. Further figures and information can be found here.
