Announced in 2017, Project Treble kicked off a modular redesign of Android’s low-level code that reduced the time it takes for phone makers to update your devices. The system has been further optimized and simplified and, according to Google and Qualcomm, will bring additional benefits for those who own devices with Snapdragon SoCs.
The two companies said in a statement released in a manner joint that their partnership will help reduce the time and resources manufacturers will have to invest in updating their phones with the latest software from Google, thereby extending the lifecycle of their products.
Going forward, any device with of Snapdragon that supports Project Treble will allow up to three Android platform updates plus an additional year of security patches . By including the pre-installed version, therefore, all upcoming devices with Snapdragon SoCs will get four major versions of Android and four years of security.
The first phones to benefit from improvements on Project Treble they will be the ones who install Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 888, so the benefits will be seen starting next year. Qualcomm has also clarified that the Project Treble innovations will be introduced also on future terminals of a lower price range , as long as they have a Qualcomm chipset.
Although Qualcomm is the most important chip manufacturer in the Android space, it is not the only one (not to forget Samsung, Huawei and clearly MediaTek ), but it’s still great news, especially in a market where many budget smartphones don’t receive more than one or two major updates. Definitely a step in the right direction.
