Apple begins development of its own 5G Modem to become independent from Qualcomm
Source: Geeknetic added 13th Dec 2020Little by little Apple has started a race to become independent from other manufacturers. We saw in their day how they said goodbye to Imagination Technologies to design their own GPUs and how, more recently, they left Intel and AMD out of their Mac and MacBooks to integrate their own Apple M1 SoCs.
However, there is a key component that they have yet to acquire from third parties, specifically from Qualcomm, and it is none other than the modem that integrate your devices with 4G or 5G network connectivity. This could soon change, since, according to Bloomberg and through statements by the vice president of hardware Johny Srouji, the company has begun the development of its own modem.
The next Apple chips would have CPU, GPU and own modem
This is a long-term strategy, so it may still be a few years until Apple can become independent from Qualcomm and have a chip where the Most of the components are developed by them without relying on third parties.
Although it seems that it will take a while, this movement has scared Qualcomm investors and its shares have suffered a decline of one 5% at the close of the market.
