Apple boss calls for a climate-neutral economy
Source: Heise.de added 14th Dec 2020Apple CEO Tim Cook has called on governments and companies to take action against climate change. At this moment of “historical urgency”, corporations finally had to act, emphasized the Apple boss at the Climate Ambition Summit 2020, which the United Nations is working with in several countries. Apple has already succeeded in working climate-neutrally in its own facilities. The emissions of climate-damaging carbon dioxide from suppliers should also be drastically reduced.
Help is currently available 95 Suppliers in the process of switching completely to renewable energies, says Cook. The company wants to work completely climate-neutral by 2030 – including the huge supply chain.
Cook: Profit and climate protection possible One does not have to choose between corporate profits and “the future of the planet”, explained Cook, “every new green innovation” is the proof that the two can be reconciled. The CEO called on other companies to 2021 when it comes to climate protection “to turn the corner”. It is possible to jointly achieve the transition to a climate-neutral economy – if there is no longer only “on the fringes” doctored around. Apple wants to be a “partner” for this transition.
Great Britain, which co-hosted the climate summit, had Apple most recently because of its device design and repair specifications criticized: The iPhone manufacturer unnecessarily provides for additional electronic waste through increasingly difficult to repair devices, where buying new is often more attractive than repair, complained British MEPs of the Environment Committee in the British House of Commons. Apple said it was “disappointed” with the report that there are more repair and recycling options for customers than ever.
Apple wants recycled iPhones Cook also emphasized at the climate summit that Apple’s goal remains to no longer have to promote new raw materials for the production of hardware, but to rely on recycling in all areas. A time goal was not mentioned here. Apple has been emphasizing for a long time that clean energy could also make more economic sense for corporations in the long term. Other US IT giants have also promised climate neutrality: Microsoft is also targeting the year 2030, Amazon is targeting 2040.
