In the recent period the rumors about the Apple Car project have multiplied and the last of the series refers to the management methods of the artificial intelligence solutions that will be on board the vehicles based on this platform. Specifically, Apple would use the System on a chip Apple A 12 Bionic for applications like driver’s gaze tracking , very useful for monitoring his attention level.

A 12 would be included in a chip Apple is developing for the specific purpose of supporting its automotive project, which would be named in code of “C1” . EETimes reports it. Furthermore, in consideration of the need to have a foundry capable of managing the needs of the automotive world , Apple would rely on Samsung or TSMC for the production of these processors. TSMC, in fact, is already working on processors of this type at 7 nanometers, while Samsung produces the SoC Exynos Auto V9 at 8 nanometers.
TO12 would be suitably modified to be able to manage specific applications for the automotive sector. According to the source, Seeing Machines’ core Occula NPU integrated into C1 would allow Apple to implement a plethora of AI features such as driver’s gaze tracking. Precisely for this reason, the support of foundries specialized in the production segment would be needed.
Using A 12 Bionic, a 7-nanometer processor, Apple could achieve substantial advantages over Tesla’s Full Self-Driving chip , currently the most advanced hardware solution in the segment. If in the Tesla house we find a solution with 6 billion transistors and an energy consumption of 36 W , Apple would respond with a SoC based on 6.9 billion transistors and a power consumption of 3.5 W .
According to previous rumors, Apple would aim to release the first vehicles based on its autonomous driving platform in 2024 and would therefore have all the time necessary to fine-tune its SoC, which originally debuted on iPhone XR, iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max in 2018. The escalation of Apple Car rumors seems to indicate that the project is in full swing now, with Hyundai recently confirming that it is in talks to produce next-generation Apple Car-based vehicles.
