Apple extends repair program for MacBook Pro 13 with display problems

Some MacBook Pro models 13 sold between 2016 and the 2018 may have screen backlight problems: Apple has started a replacement campaign in 2019, and these days it has decided to extend it

Apple has decided to extend its replacement program for a campaign already in place aimed at a backlighting problem of the displays of MacBook Pro systems from 13 inches , thus also including systems up to five years from the date of purchase or up to three years from the program start date, whichever is longer. The previous limit was up to four years after the purchase date.

This is a replacement program that was first started on 21 May 2019, following the acknowledgment that a “percentage very small “of MacBook Pro systems 13 sold in the time window between October 2016 and February 2018 , could show a lighting discrepancy in the lower part of the display or , in some cases, the failure of the screen backlight system.

Affected models are MacBook Pro 13 inches 2016 with two Thunderbolt 3 ports and MacBook Pro 13 inch 2016 with four Thunderbolt 3 ports : model can be identified by clicking on the Apple logo in the upper left corner and choosing “About This Mac”. The program is currently valid only for these two models.

In case of possession of one of the two models covered by this replacement campaign, it will be sufficient to go to an Apple Store, contact Apple or an authorized service provider to obtain the free replacement of the display: the procedure for the operation starts from the Get Support page on the official Apple website. If you have previously had a Mac system included in this campaign paid for repairs, you can contact Apple for a refund.

The problem had been highlighted during the 2019 by well-known iFixit repair service, which had discovered that the “culprit” appeared to be a flexible cable prone to tearing after repeated closing and opening of the display . Also according to the analysis of iFixit, in the following models Apple would have used a slightly longer cable, of 2 millimeters, obviously solving the problem.
