Apple is planning a Mac Pro workstation with an ARM processor
Source: Heise.de added 04th Nov 2020The Mac manufacturer will probably also offer a workstation with an ARM SoC. This is what the well-known Apple journalist Mark Gurman assumes.
In an article for the financial news agency Bloomberg he wrote this week that he had heard that a “smaller Mac Pro” was in development.
Apple gives up until 2022 However, it will be a while before the machine comes onto the market. For 2020 the Mac Pro with Apple Silicon is not yet intended, possibly not even for 2021. Apple has given itself time until 2022, Gurman recalls. In fact, when the ARM switch was announced, the group announced that it would take a total of two years.
According to Gurman, the Apple engineers are already in the process of finalizing the new Mac Pro. The design is based on the current Intel model, but will only be half the size. However, it is still unclear whether Apple will offer the ARM workstation as a replacement for the Intel machine or in addition to it. Apple’s in-house silicon can fundamentally reduce the size of the computer, as these are more efficient. The current Mac Pro is also so bulky because additional storage media and graphics chips can be built into it.
First ARM Macs next week Apple will present details of the first ARM Macs on Tuesday. Then the “One more thing” keynote rises – the third this fall. Most observers are currently expecting that Apple will only show notebooks with their own SoCs, but not desktop machines. These should appear at the earliest 2021. Apple supposedly also wants to bring iMac and Mac mini to the new platform – the latter is available in the form of the Developer Transition Kit (DTK), which, however, is not intended for the normal market.
The well-known Leaker @ On Monday L0vetodream posted the cryptic note “13 inch X 2”. This means that Apple could present two Macs with ARM SoC. That would be, should the group not start a completely new series, a MacBook Pro and a MacBook Air – both machines currently come with this screen size. Bloomberg meanwhile reports that a new 16 – Inch model of the MacBook Pro could come with an ARM chip.
