Apple smartphones and tablets are often called limited devices, and many of them are righteous. Certain elements of the system and functions known from Android are simply unavailable here. Yes, a lot has changed over the years, but iOS and iPadOS still do not allow certain activities. A good example is limiting the number of device user accounts to one profile. While it is understandable in smartphones, it is surprising that there is no “multi-user” function in iPads, which, in principle, could be used by several household members. Apple seems to be working on a solution to safely deploy multiple accounts on a single hardware.

Apple is considering introducing multi-user account support for iPhone and iPad smartphones. This is evidenced by the patent documentation relating to the Secure Enclave function.

Right from the start the existence of the iOS platform (formerly iPhone OS), Apple limited the number of user accounts available on the device to one. The same is true of iPadOS, which evolved from iOS as a tablet version. The mentioned lack limits the functionality of the equipment with the logo of a bitten apple on the casing, but it is possible that this will change. Security issues that could be solved with Secure Enclave were an obstacle to the early introduction of the feature.

Secure Enclave will allow you to separate access to individual data stored on a phone or smartphone based on more than one authorization key. The keys will be stored on a hardware coprocessor as a guarantee of security. If everything goes well for the Cupertino giant, support for multiple user accounts can go to iOS 15 and iPadOS 15 already in 2021. We will find out whether the new product has been implemented until next year’s Apple WWDC conference.
