Introduction

ASUS TUF Gaming GeForce RTX 4070 OC is a very metal-looking custom-design graphics card based on the RTX 4070 Ada performance-segment graphics card NVIDIA announced yesterday. Available from today (April 13) at $650, the TUF Gaming RTX 4070 comes priced at a $50 premium over the NVIDIA MSRP, which is why it couldn’t be featured in our review lineup for April 12. The card comes with overclocked speeds of up to 2550 MHz GPU Boost, compared to 2475 MHz reference. The card promises superior cooling and noise characteristics over MSRP cards, and some enthusiast-friendly features such as dual-BIOS. ASUS has also made this card easy on PC builders, by giving it the legacy 8-pin PCIe power connector, instead of the 16-pin 12VHPWR connector you will find on the top ASUS ROG Strix 4070 and the NVIDIA Founders Edition.

The GeForce RTX 4070 promises maxed out gaming at resolutions up to 1440p, or high refresh-rate competitive e-sports gameplay at that resolution. 4K Ultra HD is very much possible if you know your way around game settings, or can simply enable the widely supported DLSS or DLSS 3. The new GeForce Ada graphics architecture debuts the third generation of NVIDIA RTX real time ray tracing technology, which promises even less of an impact of ray tracing on your game’s performance, thanks to generational increases in ray tracing performance. The optical flow accelerator component enables DLSS 3, which can generate entire frames of the game using AI, without involving the graphics rendering machinery.

The RTX 4070 is based on the same AD104 silicon powering the RTX 4070 Ti, albeit heavily cut down. It features 5,888 CUDA cores, 46 RT cores, 184 Tensor cores, 64 ROPs, and 184 TMUs. The memory setup is unchanged from the RTX 4070 Ti—you get 12 GB of 21 Gbps GDDR6X memory across a 192-bit wide memory bus, yielding 504 GB/s of memory bandwidth, which is still higher than the 448 GB/s the previous-generation RTX 3070 manages with its 256-bit memory bus. The core-configuration, particularly the shader count, is identical to that of the RTX 3070, but over a brand new architecture that promises generational performance uplifts.
