As soon as the desired glasses models have been selected, the robot is already on its way to the warehouse. This is not science fiction – it is reality at Edel Optics in Hamburg. Five robots are currently in use in a branch of the optician on Ballindamm, company spokeswoman Katarina Ninkovic told dpa.

If the robots currently only fetch the glasses frame of their choice from the warehouse, even more is conceivable later. According to the information, the robots cost just under 3400 euros each and come from the American company temi. The castors are hidden in the massive base of the robots, with the help of which they can move freely in the shop. In addition to a shelf, a touchscreen is also mounted on the waist-high desk.

The aim of the project is the so-called virtual goods display, explains Ninkovic. Instead of being in showcases, the glasses will in future be examined on the iPad and then presented by the robots. There are also practical reasons for this: If you would each of the round 35. 000 glasses from the warehouse on the sales area, you would lose track of things quickly, said Ninkovic. However, she does not see any danger for the workplaces of the employees, since the robots have not yet been planned as customer advisors.
