Environmental protection is now not only fashionable, but also important. More and more companies and institutions are trying to be more “eco”, because the whole world has noticed that we are going in the wrong direction. Excessive consumerism and a lack of care for our planet can have dire consequences. One of the ways to fight for Earth is to replace standard fuels with hydrogen fuel – this trend is more and more often and more widely used, among others in the automotive industry. Scientists and engineers around the world are working on the most efficient extraction of hydrogen. An interesting discovery was made recently by chemists from the British University of Oxford. They have proven that they are able to extract hydrogen from the most ordinary PET bottles. Is this a breakthrough in recycling?

University of Oxford researchers have developed a method to convert plastic waste into hydrogen, which can be used as clean fuel and high-value solid carbon.

All processing plastic into hydrogen fuel is based on a simple chemical process – catalysis, which is supposed to make it possible to obtain “green” fuel from ordinary plastic, and thus recycling all bottles, bags and packaging can take on a completely different dimension. we combine the plastic with a catalyst (e.g. iron and aluminum oxide) and then microwaved it. Yes, a conventional microwave oven or any larger device, but working on the same principle, is released after a few seconds 97% hydrogen, the remainder is high-value solid carbon The process is therefore fast, low-energy, and additional o relatively inexpensive.

If this idea could actually be implemented on a large scale, we would have a huge breakthrough in environmental protection. We produce an average of almost 5 billion tonnes of plastic waste per year, and we already have entire islands that are landfills on the seas and oceans. Replacing bottles with hydrogen fuel can be a rescue, and most importantly – it combines useful with … useful. Not only could we get rid of rubbish, but also accelerate and facilitate the process of creating hydrogen fuel – and this may, in the long run, translate into lower prices and greater availability of “green” cars.
