Bundestag wants to ban fax machines from ministries from the coming legislative period

At least one decision by the Council of Elders in the Bundestag dated 14. January 2021 close. It says that the German Parliament wants to end the use of fax machines once and for all from the coming legislative period. Young parliamentarians in particular reacted to the report with ridicule. For example, the parliamentary secretary of the Left, Jan Korte tweeted: “This will be a blatant change.”

But many other users hardly find any words of praise for the decision. While some wonder loudly whether the decision was a bad joke, others are outraged that it wasn’t made much earlier.
Germany is one of the last countries in which the fax machine is still widely used in authorities. A request from the FDP last year revealed that the various ministries still use more than 900 fax machines. The use of fax machines in official matters is often criticized due to acute security issues. There is no end-to-end encryption when faxing, and the devices themselves are often affected by security gaps.
