This year’s Call of Duty game could be in some trouble. According to a notable leaker, the game has been encountering development issues for sometime now and as a result, Activision has reportedly lowered its expectations for the release and already has a ‘recovery roadmap’ planned months ahead of time.

Tom Henderson, a known leaker who often posts new information on upcoming shooters like Battlefield 6 and Call of Duty, has recently shared some new information on COD 2021. According to their sources, Activision is pushing ahead with plans to release a new Call of Duty this year, despite some apparent issues with the game at this late stage in development.

“Activision have stated that a new premium Call of Duty title will release this year and from what I’ve been told, they knew it wouldn’t perform that well (“recovery road map” is already in place)”, Henderson said.

The next Call of Duty, currently known as Call of Duty WWII Vanguard, is being developed by Sledgehammer games and will tell an alternative history story through its campaign. Sledgehammer was previously working on a different Call of Duty game in collaboration with Raven Software, but that project also faced development issues, leading to Activision stepping in and pulling Sledgehammer off of the project. That game was then reworked to become Black Ops Cold War and Treyarch was put in place as the lead studio.

KitGuru Says: If a recovery roadmap really is being planned six months ahead of time, then it might be time for Activision to finally stop pushing annual releases and instead, give the franchise and developers a bit of breathing room. After all, annual campaign and multiplayer releases aren’t nearly as important now that Warzone has taken off, which is now the go-to Call of Duty mode for most players.
