A few months ago there was a lot of curiosity about the future of EOS M solutions from Canon : some news could have arrived in 2021 for this system, but with the passage of time this hypothesis seems to wane more and more. Something was guessed with the EOS M 50 Mark II, where the manufacturer’s commitment seems to have been scarce. In the meantime, the rumors continued on the possible arrival of mirrorless APS-C with RF attachment .
Mirrorless APS-C with RF mount in Canon’s future
At the end of October 2020 the first concrete rumors emerged on a mirrorless APS-C with RF attack and now it is confirmed that the prototype unit test is indeed in progress. This could mean that by 2021 the EOS M system will definitely retire. Instead, new APS-C models and ad hoc lenses for this format will begin to be presented.
There are no images or technical characteristics yet but it seems that the camera body chosen by Canon is very similar to that of EOS R6, so much so that it is defined “almost identical” (in the past reference was made to similar dimensions to EOS RP).
The chosen path is therefore to reply to Nikon and Z 50 aiming to optimize production . In particular, using a single connection (RF or Z, depending on the manufacturer) could allow to improve the production chain by reducing costs and therefore reducing the possible losses attributable to the downward market.
Obviously until we see at least some photographs or know some more precise technical specifications it will be difficult to have a precise picture of the situation. Furthermore, it will be necessary to understand how users will react to the arrival of less and less expensive full-frame mirrorless that could make them lean towards this solution rather than APS-C.
