The biggest announcement from Lisa Su’s keynote at CES 2021 was undoubtedly the reveal of the Ryzen 5000 mobile processors. However, we did also get confirmation of the rumoured non-X Ryzen 9 5900 and Ryzen 7 5800 CPUs.
We’ve been hearing about these non-X Ryzen desktop parts since the end of last year, and today AMD has officially announced the Ryzen 9 5900 and Ryzen 7 5800. Both are essentially lower-TDP versions of their ‘full-fat’ counterparts, with the 5900 still a 12C/24T chip, while the 5800 is 8C/16T. The non-X parts are rated at 65W, compared to 105W for the regular ‘X’ versions.
In the past, these lower-TDP non-X parts – like the Ryzen 7 3700 – have proved extremely popular as a cheaper alternative to the more premium X SKUs. This time around, the 5900 and 5800 are going to be OEM only. There is precedence for this, as the Ryzen 9 3900 was OEM only, but right now there’s no 3700 equivalent, so if you want Ryzen 5000 on the desktop, you have to buy an X SKU.
KitGuru says: Some may be disappointed that these CPUs are OEM-only, but hopefully we will see non-X 5600 and 5700 SKUs before long.
