CES: Mercedes shows fully digital vehicle cockpit
Source: Heise.de added 12th Jan 2021The MBUX hyperscreen has a speedometer display with a diagonal of 12, 3 inches (31 centimeters). The infotainment display in the middle brings it to a diagonal of 17, 7 inches (45 centimeters) and a resolution of 2400 × 900 pixels. So far, the third display on the right side has been unusual (also 12, 3 inches / 31 centimeters) intended to entertain the passenger. Overall, the hyperscreen with the three displays has a width of 141 centimeters. All three displays use OLED technology, which should ensure a high-contrast representation, since black areas are really pitch black. They are hidden behind a slightly curved front made of gorilla glass.
Only the middle display reacts to touch gestures and also has haptic feedback. According to Mercedes, a total of twelve actuators are located under the touchscreen surfaces and trigger a vibration in the cover plate at certain points. Theoretically, haptic feedback makes operation easier without keeping your eyes off the road for too long.
Mercedes MBUX Hyperdisplay (7 images) Mercedes presents the MBUX hyper display floating in virtual space at the virtual CES The developers have also thought about as little distraction as possible elsewhere: The main element of the middle screen is the road map visible in the foreground. Functions such as infotainment control or the regulation of heating and ventilation can be found as virtual buttons at the bottom of the screen and are only enlarged when necessary. Mercedes calls the operating concept “Zero Layer”. This should make scrolling through lists and clicking in endless menus and submenus a thing of the past.
No buttons Since a dozen physical buttons quickly come together in a modern car, the display does not offer enough space. Mercedes wants to tackle the problem with AI: In total there are around 20 So-called “Magic Modules”, for example for heating or seat settings. With the help of artificial intelligence, the system should decide for itself which buttons the driver needs and which are displayed accordingly. If the system is wrong, alternatively 71 percent of the functions should also be called by voice command
The display on the passenger side is not quite as feudal: According to Mercedes, it does not support touch input . The camera mounted on the driver’s side ensures that the passenger watching the video does not distract the driver. It is not only used to detect drowsiness, but is also supposed to notice when the driver looks at the front passenger display. Apparently the video playback is stopped there.
Introduction with the EQS The bottom line is that the MBUX Hyperscreen needs a lot of computing power. Like the first MBUX generation, which 900 was also presented at the CES, the new one also sets Generation based on NVIDIA technology. According to Mercedes, eight CPU cores 24 gigabytes of RAM and a RAM memory bandwidth of 46, 4 gigabytes per second mark the technical key data .
The market launch of the MBUX hyperscreen in the fully electrically powered sedan EQS. Mercedes has not yet announced whether the system will soon appear in other Mercedes vehicles in an identical design. Since MBUX debuted in a different form in the A-Class two years ago and was recently presented in a modified form in the new S-Class, the hyperscreen should be reserved for the EQS for the time being ambitiously, how well it works in practice, how the haptic feedback feels and how susceptible the hyperscreen is to fingerprints, only a hands-on will show what was unfortunately not possible at the virtual CES.
