Google announced the release of the Coral Dev Board Mini yesterday. Like the Raspberry Pi, this is a single-board computer that developers can use to create all kinds of different systems for different functions. Just recently, a Reddit user converted a Raspberry Pi into a stylish music player. The developer board only measures 64 mm x 64 mm and is equipped with a special AI acceleration, which, according to Google, should allow particularly fast machine learning.
The Coral Dev Board Mini also comes with a MediaTek 8167 s, which has four cortex A 35 – cores. Also on board is an IMG PowerVR GE 8300 GPU. In addition, there are two gigabytes of LPDDR3 memory and a flash memory with space for 8 GB of data.
The external connections include two USB type C Interfaces also include an FFC connector for connecting cameras and a jack plug. Sensors and actuators can be attached using 40 GPIO pins. The network connection takes place via WiFi 5. A micro-HDMI 1.4 output also makes connection to a display particularly easy. With the support of a special, graphical Linux distribution called Mendel, it is also possible to use the single-board computer as an alternative to the popular Raspberry Pi. At the moment, however, the performance of this is still above the new board from Google. The advantage lies in the integrated Google Edge TPU coprocessor, which should have a performance of 4 TOPS. This should make the learning and execution of machine learning algorithms much faster than, for example, on the Raspberry Pi. The new Coral Dev Board Mini is now available for around 100 US dollars can be purchased from Seeed and are currently sold out. A delivery should then take place at the end of the month.
