Cyberpunk 2077 can also be played on Linux systems
Source: Hardware Luxx added 13th Dec 2020With today’s release of Cyberpunk 2077 the long awaited one can finally be released AAA title of the Polish Spieleschmide CD Projekt Red play. In addition to console gamers, PC gamers can enjoy the action role-playing game. There is also positive news for all Linux users: Due to the open source software Proton, the title in question can not only be played on Windows PCs, but also finds its way on Linux systems.
For this, however, at least Proton version 5. 13. 4 must be installed. An AMD graphics card is also required. Anyone who runs their Linux system with a card from NVIDIA cannot currently be up to mischief in Night City. A successful start of Cyberpunk 2077 under Linux also requires the current git version of the Mesa driver library.
Proton is based on the Wine software and is currently being developed by Valve itself. Valve developer Pierre-Loup Griffais explicitly thanked the Polish game maker on Twitter. CD Projekt Red provided a corresponding version of Cyberpunk 2019 in advance, which enabled Valve to carry out sufficient tests to ensure smooth support of proton.
It is not yet known when Linux users with a built-in NVIDIA card will be able to start the new action role-playing game on their system. However, Valve seems to be working on the said problem, which means that there will be a corresponding update in this regard in the near future.
As we already reported, Cyberpunk 2077 already enjoys over a million active players on Steam . Official figures from Sony or Microsoft are not yet available. It is also currently unclear how many users have secured a copy of the AAA title via the Epic Games Store or GoG. Nonetheless, cyberpunk 2077 seems to be well on its way to making video game history.
