We recently mentioned that a producer from CD Projekt RED revealed that for the premiere of Cyberpunk 2077 ray tracing will only be available on NVIDIA GeForce RTX cards 2000 and 3000. Although each of the four effects that will appear in the Polish developer ‘s RPG uses Microsoft’s API – DirectX Ray Tracing (DXR), which will be supported by the upcoming AMD Radeon RX graphics cards 6900 XT, RX 6800 XT and RX 6800 . AMD revealed in an official press release that all industry-standard titles based on ray tracing, including DXR and the upcoming Vulkan Ray Tracing API, will be supported by their chips. NVIDIA has officially confirmed that it will not block ray tracing in any way in the upcoming Cyberpunk 2077.

Contrary to what CD Projekt RED said, NVIDIA has confirmed that Ray Tracing in Cyberpunk 2077 will work on any graphics card that supports the DXR API, and therefore also on the RX series Radeons 6000.

Cyberpunk 2077 – ray tracing for the premiere only on GeForce RTX

News from the CD Projekt RED camp could suggest that a possible ray tracing blockade for competing cards may result from some agreement between the Polish studio and NVIDIA. Nothing could be further from the truth – the Greens have denied this, revealing that “nothing related to ray tracing in Cyberpunk 2077 belongs to NVIDIA” , so ray tracing support for this game on Radeon RX cards 6000 is AMD dependent. Cyberpunk 2077 is not an exception – only JX3, Wolfenstein: Youngblood, and Quake 2 RTX use Green’s proprietary extensions, albeit the latter the title has a version based on the Vulkan KHR ray tracing extension, so after the appropriate AMD drivers there should be no problem with ray tracing in this iconic FPS on Radeon RX cards 6000.

Cyberpunk 2077 with support for Ray Tracing and DLSS 2.0 for the premiere

Supported by support, but a separate issue is performance on AMD systems, which will appear 18 November (RX 6800 XT and RX 6800) and December 8 (RX 6900 XT ). After all, ray tracing in Cyberpunk 2077 was optimized for GeForce RTX 2000 and 3000. Although the RPG will come out after the release of the Radeons RX 6000, the studio currently has other priorities (bug fixes and versions for current-gen consoles, which contributed to the next obsuwy), so you should rather expect a clearly better performance of Cyberpunk 2077 with ray tracing enabled on NVIDIA cards. We will find out how it will be in reality 10 December 2020 of the year (hopefully …).
