Dell Technologies presented an extensive reorientation of its product and service strategy at this year’s customer event. The new APEX project aims to offer everything-as-a-service in the future. The central element for this is a new cloud console, which is to serve as a control layer for all on-premise and multi-cloud deployments.

The background to this is that multi-cloud environments in connection with the new pay-as-you-go and on-premises facilities require considerable cloud management efforts. And Dell now wants to fill this gap in administration in order to establish itself as the top dog for the entire IT landscape. “Project Apex offers customers a simple and consistent management tool for all PCs and their entire IT infrastructure,” said Dell CTO Jeff Clarke. By that he means: The offer ranges from storage to servers and network infrastructure as well as complete hyper-convergent systems to PCs.

Cloud model for everything APEX is the logical continuation of Dell Technologies on Demand, an infrastructure that came onto the market a year ago. It is a Dell-operated private cloud with usage-based prices. APEX is the logical continuation of Dell Technologies on Demand, an infrastructure that was launched a year ago. It is a Dell-operated private cloud with usage-based prices. Project APEX is now expanding this to include multi-cloud management. The other infrastructure elements and even new vertical services – for example SAP-as-a-Service or VDI – are to be added here later.

The new cloud console is supposed to administer all cloud platforms used and the on-premise devices which she also manages as a service. To do this, the console establishes a connection to the three large public cloud providers. Hence, APEX would henceforth be the only interface that manages the entire IT inventory, where all accounts accrue and via which all other resources can be kept in view.

In Europe, the cloud console is to be in the first Quarter 2021 appear. Storage-as-a-Service (STaaS) will also come onto the market as part of APEX in the first half of the year 2021. The company thus offers an on-premises-as-a-service portfolio of scalable storage resources that supports services for block and file data and provides a comprehensive range of enterprise features. Dell calculates all of this using a cloud-like pricing structure
