Google has released an update for the command line editor Cloud Shell. The tool provides developers with a command line environment in the cloud. Developers can edit their code and their configuration files without having to leave the browser.

The update extends the tool with an online development environment. To enable cloud-native development, the editor now supports cloud code plug-ins. Cloud Code has a collection of IDE plug-ins that were originally available for IntelliJ IDEA and Visual Studio Code. Cloud Shell now supports these plug-ins and extends the functions.

Support of plug-ins for Cloud Code In addition to an integrated Kubernetes and Cloud Run development and debugging environments include integrated container tools such as Minikube, Skaffold, Buildpacks and Jib to provide local emulators and continuous feedback for faster local development. The update also integrates an API Explorer, which is intended to simplify the integration of Google APIs in applications.

The new features also include comprehensive language support for the programming platforms Go, Java, .NET, Python and Node.js. This includes editing functions such as syntax highlighting, code suggestion, linting, code navigation, refactoring, testing and apparently intuitive debugging support.

Support for IDE workspaces In addition to additional functions, such as integrated source control via Git, the update brings support for IDE workspaces, which are intended to promote teamwork and work across multiple projects. The Cloud Shell Editor uses the existing Theia development functions, because the new version is supported by the Theia IDE platform from Eclipse. Eclipse Theia is an expandable platform for the development of multilingual cloud and desktop IDEs.

Thus the editor carries out source code control tasks based on Theia. The functions available include examining code examples, cloning a repository, for example. Developers are given the opportunity to create IDE workspaces and thus switch between different projects. The configuration of the IDE and the debugging environment is defined directly in the source code.

More information on the latest release for the Cloud Shell Editor can be found on the Google Cloud blog. Interested parties can also access the Cloud Run Quickstart and the preview to test the new features.
