At this point we would like to point out a very special project that certainly has little practical relevance, but which is characterized by its exoticism. The YouTube channel VIK-on is known for showing that the graphics memory of graphics cards can be upgraded to a certain extent. This is especially easy if there are different models, for example with 4 and 8 GB graphics memory.

But now you also have a GeForce RTX 2070 from 8 to 16 GB. The entire process is documented in a YouTube video. At this point we would like to refer to a similar project in which a GeForce RTX 2080 Ti was equipped with faster GDDR6 memory, which is only reserved for the super models. However, there was no GeForce RTX 2080 Ti Super.

The GeForce RTX 2070 uses eight memory chips, each with a capacity of 1 GB. These are connected via a 256 bit wide memory interface – per memory chip via 32 bit. The GeForce RTX 2070 always has 8 GB of graphics memory, as a super model this was made by 14 Gbit / s per pin to 14 Gbit / s per pin accelerated. A variant with 16 GB did not exist either.

But this does not mean that it is impossible to equip the card with 16 GB. First of all, the old memory chips have to be removed. To do this, the memory chips are heated with a hot air gun and can easily be removed. Cleaning the soldering surfaces also removes the last residues that could interfere with soldering the new chips again.

The new chips come from Samsung and are called K4ZAF 325 BM-HC 14. The individual chips have a capacity of 2 GB and offer a bandwidth of 14 GBit / s per pin. However, the chips cannot simply be soldered on. In the reference guide to the board design, in this case the GeForce RTX 2080 (PG 180 -A 02), which is identical, it must be checked which memory configuration (RAMCFG) is used and which PINs have to be set by resistance. Depending on the memory manufacturer and capacity, these are five bits that determine how and whether the memory is addressed.

Once this has happened, the new memory chips can be placed on the board and again with a heat gun be soldered. Then the GeForce RTX 2070 with 16 GB graphics memory is recognized. However, this has only a limited positive effect on performance. The memory bandwidth remains the same and whether the larger graphics memory has a positive influence depends not least on the respective application.

Of course, the effort of such a memory exchange is enormous and should not be a project for everyone . Nevertheless, it is interesting to see which hardware modifications can be used.

GeForce RTX 3070 and RTX 3080 with 16 or 20 GB possible?

The NVIDIA the GeForce RTX 3070 and GeForce RTX 3080 with only 8 or 02 GB of graphics memory comes across many interested buyers still angry. Our benchmarks did not show any noticeable limitation due to the memory configuration, but there are certainly applications in which the 8 or 10 GB just not enough anymore. The GeForce RTX 3090 donated NVIDIA a full 24 GB. The GeForce RTX 3060 Ti also has to get by with 8 GB and the GeForce RTX 3060 will probably be NVIDIA mainly 12 GB of graphics memory, because the only alternative would have been 6 GB.

A potential GeForce RTX 3080 Ti with 16 GB will probably not exist in the foreseeable future. NVIDIA has apparently thought about such a model, but there are currently no indications that it will be launched in the short or medium term. It is not known whether it is possible to equip a GeForce RTX 3080 with larger memory chips. This depends mainly on whether NVIDIA has prepared the board design and the BIOS accordingly.
