DxO PhotoLab 4: Intelligent noise reduction in raw photos

Source: Heise.de added 21st Oct 2020

DxO PhotoLab’s core competence is the automatic correction of aberrations in raw photos based on profiles. The program currently supports 60. 000 Camera-lens combinations, including new cameras like the Canon EOS R5. DxO PhotoLab not only optimizes lens distortion, color fringing and light distribution, but also exposure, contrast and image noise. The French manufacturer has significantly improved the latter.

Noise removal with KI The new DxO DeepPrime algorithm uses neural networks to reduce image noise and JPEG artifacts better than the previous Prime algorithm. Prime is still available, however. DeepPrime is designed to drastically reduce image noise without softening edges and textures, and also to protect skin tones. In night shots, the algorithm should receive stars and not add any new ones to the image, which is quite possible with methods without AI.

DxO DeepPrime reduces image noise, retouches or but does not add asterisks.

Improved pallet navigation DxO PhotoLab is one of the things that makes it stand out that you can activate and deactivate individual dialogs. In the meantime, a number of pallets have come together that can be managed better in version 4 than before.

In the future, a main switch in the level palette will only show the pallets that you have actually worked on. A star symbol can be used to mark palettes as favorites and filter them in the header. You can also search for palettes in the header, for example “Exposure”. All palettes are now sorted into the categories exposure, color, sharpness, geometry and local adjustments, which are available as buttons above the palette.

Individual pallets can now be divided into categories , Filter favorite stars or text input.

Manage and export In the integrated image management ” Photo library ”photos can now be renamed in batches. You can search for and replace text, add prefixes or suffixes or insert numbering. DxO PhotoLab does not yet support placeholders for metadata.

When copying and pasting development settings, as in Lightroom Classic CC, you can now select individual editing functions that are to be copied, for example only changes to the exposure. The editing process now groups the settings by palette, such as changes to the gradation curve. The history shows in detail which values were changed.

A watermark can now be copied in during export. The position and size of image and text can be set in detail and integrated into the photo with seven fade modes such as “soft light”.

DxO PhotoLab 4 integrates watermarks and copies them into the picture using seven different modes.
