In a current video, the colleagues from LinusTechTips are building the “ fastest gaming PC in the world “. In addition, an Intel Core i9 – 9866 K is used, but also an ASUS ROG Strix GeForce RTX 3090 OC as we already had it in the test. With regard to the imminent start of the Ryzen – 5000 – processors and Radeon RX – 6000 – graphics cards can only be called the fastest gaming PC with reservation, which is also what the authors of the video do

The video is particularly interesting with regard to the cooling of the processor. A custom water cooling from EKWB is used and the water cooler is apparently a prototype for which one does not want to give all the details yet. The components of the water cooler are partially pixelated in order not to reveal what it is. The parts that can be seen initially look like a standard water cooler, but it should be significantly heavier than is usually the case.

Additional cables, especially the The idle temperatures shown in the range from 0 to 4 ° C indicate that a kind of Peltier element or similar technology is used here. This is an electrothermal transducer that generates a temperature difference by flowing a current through the element.

Such an element becomes cool on the one hand, on the other for it warm. The low temperatures just above 0 ° C are achieved. However, waste heat must still be dissipated – here from the warm side of the Peltier element.

A Core i9 – 10900 K naturally reaches its Thermal Velocity Boost of 5.3 GHz without any problems at these temperatures. LinusTechTips even overclocked the selected processor to 5.4 GHz. Under load, the temperatures of the individual cores are 50 to 60 ° C.

The approach of using a Peltier element in a cooler has already been tried by many manufacturers. Ultimately, there are two factors that usually speak against it: First, such an element naturally produces a certain amount of waste heat, which then also has to be dissipated. If in doubt, this is even higher than the waste heat from the processor. Secondly, temperatures in the range of 0 ° C and slightly above are always problematic, since moisture can condense on the cold surfaces here. Correspondingly, good ventilation must be provided, or a shutdown must take place if such low temperatures are reached.

EKWB will probably soon reveal the secret of the cooler. Then we know all the details.
