The Munich startup Sono Motors is aiming for series approval for its technology to integrate solar modules into the body – and not just into the roof of the vehicle. For this process called homologation, the company is cooperating with the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE in Freiburg, announced Sono Motors. The aim is to create “the first complete documentation”, which is required for the homologation of solar electric vehicles and which sets a precedent.

Sono Motors wants the Sion for the price of 25. 500 Euro to bring a car onto the market with solar modules attached to its body. You should increase the range of the battery (71 km according to WLTP standard) in favorable weather by up to 34 km per day.

Total service life The solar modules are incorporated flush into the surface of the body parts and are intended to supply vehicles with solar power over their entire service life. According to Sono Motors, “lightweight, highly efficient photovoltaic modules with a control unit, a model for predicting the energy yield and other system components that enable electrical and mechanical integration in vehicle bodies” are used.
