Electric cars are a threat to underground parking lots

Just before the weekend, an unusual but dangerous incident took place in one of Warsaw’s underground car parks. As a result of the explosion of an electric car, the cars were destroyed 46 and the structure of the building itself was damaged. This event may result in increasing doubts regarding the real safety of electric vehicles. Similar situations, although less severe, had happened before and, interestingly, not only in cars, but also in scooters. Taking into account the fact that due to the increased fire risk, cars equipped with a gas installation cannot use a large number of underground parking lots, a similar “fate” may await electric cars, which are becoming more and more popular in Poland.

Electric cars are considered environmentally friendly and safe. Is it right? Looking at the recent incident involving a vehicle explosion in an underground car park, the matter is not so obvious.

Until a few years ago, electric cars were a song of the future. Today, cars with characteristic green license plates are no longer a rare sight. Vehicles like the BMW i3. Nissan Leaf, Tesla Model 3 or Volksvagen e-Golf or Hyundai Kona is a model that can be found in Poland more and more often. The real “boom” in electrics is still ahead of us. However, before ecological cars flood the transport infrastructure, it is necessary to consider the regulations governing safety.

As I have already mentioned, a large part of underground car parks, both in office buildings and and in residential buildings, it prohibits entry to cars equipped with a gas installation. The reason is the increased risk of fire. Looking at the often imperfect installations of this type, and therefore the possible effects of their unsealing, the matter seems understandable.
