Electric cars: Daimler's noise experts develop “emotional sound”

Electric motors do not babble, no nailing or screeching can be heard. Some marketing experts have heard that this could result in the owners losing a certain emotional access to their fully electric vehicle. This is where the sound experts from Daimler come in: They are working on “making the paradigm shift from the combustion engine to the electric car audible with a holistic sound staging”.

Future EQ models from Mercedes-Benz should be able to be sensually experienced in a new dimension with selectable soundscapes and intuitively perceptible feedback sounds, writes Daimler. The software for this is created in-house. Sound samples of this are currently not yet available on the web; However, Daimler will take care of it on request from heise online.

In the interior, passengers should select one of several soundscapes via the central display but can also switch off the noises. This includes the engine sound that is reproduced via the loudspeakers. “It arouses emotions and is inspiring,” emphasizes Daimler. In addition, the engine sound reacts to the position of the accelerator pedal, speed or recuperation. The selected driving program should also influence the driving sound. In the “Sport” program, for example, the interior sounds more dynamic. The sounds are calculated and played back in real time using sound design algorithms on the amplifier of the Burmester surround sound system.

Sound inside and outside The “holistic sound concept” also includes sounds that give the driver feedback – for example when the car is unlocked, when it can be started or when saying goodbye . The charging process is also accompanied by sounds, but then outside the vehicle with the Acoustic Vehicle Alert System (AVAS), which is mandatory in new electric cars. In Europe, AVAS must sound up to a speed of km / h so that pedestrians, wheelchair users and cyclists do not miss the electric car.
