Electric truck: VW truck subsidiary Traton and Hino cooperate

The VW commercial vehicle holding Traton and its Japanese partner Hino want to develop electric trucks together in the future. To this end, the companies have signed a corresponding agreement, as Volkswagen announced on Wednesday (27. October 2020) in Munich.

“The next important step in electrification” “This new joint venture with our strong partner Hino is the next important step in electrification, “said Traton CEO Matthias Gründler. The joint development of battery-electric vehicles, fuel cell trucks and components is to be promoted. In addition, Traton and Hino want to develop joint electrical platforms including software and interfaces.

Traton and Hino already have 2018 decided on a fundamental cooperation and had also founded a joint venture for the purchase of parts last year. Both companies want to examine further possibilities of cooperation.

The electrical joint venture will initially be located in Södertälje, Sweden, and then expanded to Tokyo in a further step. Traton mainly consists of the Munich truck and bus manufacturers MAN and Scania. Traton wants to invest one billion euros in electrification by 2025.
