Emissions standard Euro 7: CDU / CSU fears abolition of the internal combustion engine
Source: Heise.de added 16th Dec 2020The Union parliamentary group has warned against the abolition of the internal combustion engine through the back door because of possible stricter emissions standards for the car industry in Europe. “Measure and center are the guidelines for political action for the CDU / CSU parliamentary group even with the new exhaust emissions legislation,” says a position paper of the CDU / CSU parliamentary group. Good politics should be ambitious, but must remain realistic, the result accepted and affordable in order to be sustainable.
Alois Rainer (CSU), transport policy spokesman for the parliamentary group, said: “The modern combustion engine will also be needed in the future. We will not let people in rural areas, long-distance or commuter traffic, but will enable modern individual transport in the future. We firmly oppose the abolition of the internal combustion engine through the back door. We are committed to expanding our pioneering technological leadership at EU level. ”
Tightening after ten years The background is preparations for the Euro 7 emissions standard by the EU Commission. This regulates the pollutant emissions from cars and trucks, such as nitrogen oxides and fine dust. A study commissioned by the Commission suggests that the rules are sometimes much stricter. There should be decisions on new limit values in the coming year. The limit values have only been changed occasionally since the introduction of the Euro 6 emissions standard in the year 2015. However, the test conditions under which the cars are not allowed to exceed the limit values have meanwhile been significantly tightened. In the meantime, among other things, the emission of particles and nitrogen oxides is measured on the street – and not just in the laboratory.
The German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA) had made it clear that a reduction in limit values in combination With the tightening of test conditions, the internal combustion engine as a drive type is pushing its limits. The head of the VDA industry association, Hildegard Müller, had said that there was a risk that the EU Commission would de facto ban cars with internal combustion engines 2025. The VDA fears that exhaust gas aftertreatment will become significantly more expensive.
Union: Critical evaluation of feasibility In the paper calls on the CDU / CSU parliamentary group on the federal government to critically evaluate scenarios with regard to the setting of goals and technical feasibility. Emissions legislation should be developed and evaluated against the background of the EU’s air quality targets. A look at the figures from the Federal Environment Agency shows that Germany is making good progress in terms of air pollution control.
It is also said that the combustion engine must be further developed as an important technology for use in a CO2-neutral future. “Synthetic fuels burn much cleaner, generate fewer pollutants such as fine dust and nitrogen oxides and can therefore make a valuable contribution to air pollution control in our cities.” You can also read an article on heise / Autos:
