Germany is allowed to support the switch to more climate-friendly local public transport according to a decision by the EU competition authorities with up to 300 million euros. The EU Commission approved corresponding subsidies on Tuesday (22. Dec. 2020).

The public transport should encourage people to switch Germany will use it to promote innovative projects in order to switch from private and motorized transport to sustainable public transport, said the EU Vice-Commission President Margrethe Vestager. The measures contributed to reducing carbon dioxide emissions.

According to the communication, the approximately 300 Million euros between 2020 and 2023 projects are available that make public transport more attractive than other, more polluting means of transport.
