Facebook is finally testing a dark mode in its mobile app, and has started rolling out the feature to a handful of hand-picked clients. The news was officially confirmed on Jane Manchun Wong’s Twitter channel, who posted a video showing the new “dark” interface in action. The video was made in collaboration with the social media giant and lasts slightly longer than half a minute. Here it is.

The dark mode on Facebook will arrive on both iPhone and iPad, as well as Android devices. It is not clear with which criteria Facebook has chosen the clients on which to activate the mode, which has been loudly requested by several users over the last few months. Anyone who has received the functionality can enable it through a new option in the Settings menu, within the Settings & privacy . The user can force the activation of the dark mode always, keep the light mode, or enable it only when the system setting requires it.

The dark theme on Facebook for iOS and Android is coming

On iOS and some versions of Android, therefore, the user can synchronize the dark mode of Facebook with that of the operating system, then enable it – if provided for by the latter – only at night or in certain circumstances chosen by the user.

Facebook users have been waiting for a long time for the dark theme on mobile . In March the new UI was introduced on desktop, while on Messenger the option was made available even during 2019. The reasons for such a prolonged delay with regard to the main Facebook app are not clear, however, considering the volume of users and the heterogeneity of the content processed, it is understandable that the company wanted to approach it in the most precautionary way possible.
