As we have already reported in the past, the federal government plans to make the passport more secure. The Peng collective managed to apply for a passport using a morphed picture of two people. Now something should also change about the identity card. After the Bundestag had already approved the bill, the Bundesrat has now also approved. Thus, all German citizens who apply for an identity card from August 2nd 2020 must deposit the prints of their two index fingers. The images collected are then saved on the ID card’s RFID chip. So far, this information has been voluntary.
There are also innovations in the transmission of passport photos. These can then no longer be printed out in advance and brought with you. This is to prevent that, as the Peng collective succeeded, morphed images can be submitted with the application. The new regulations come into effect in May 2025.
