Many cars in retro design have failed on the market in the medium term, the reasons for this may vary widely. Renault is now presenting a study that quotes the once very successful R5. This is not without risk, because those responsible are certainly aware that this prototype will arouse desires for a series model.

The study “Renault 5 Prototype” unabashedly quotes the former successful model and thus follows the path that BMW with the Mini and Fiat with the 500 have passed successfully. Headlights and taillights of the new R5 are just as reminiscent of the original as the straight lines in the window on the side and at the rear. The front door handle extends electrically when it is needed. We don’t expect that for the series, nor for the huge wheels of the study.

Study Renault 5 (8 pictures) The third Renault 5 is still just a study. But …

Renault is still silent on details at the moment, nor does it allow itself to be carried out on possible series production Look at cards. A few things can, however, be taken as established. Until 2025 Renault wants 15 introduce new models, seven of which are battery-powered. If a new R5 goes into series production, it will most likely not come onto the market with a combustion engine.

With Zoe, Clio and Twingo, Renault is already broadly positioned in the segment of small and small cars. It seems unlikely that another representative will be added with the R5. Rather, one of the current models will have to give way, although it can be assumed that it will not be the successful Zoe (test). Should the new R5 be as compact as its ancestor, it would be the Twingo that Renault would phase out. At first glance, what speaks against this thesis is that Renault has just brought it onto the market with a battery-electric drive. But whether the Twingo Electric will establish itself on the market in the long term seems questionable. The battery is comparatively small, the drive did not completely convince us in the Smart.

With a battery-electric R5, Renault would attempt to increase the success of the Zoe with 30. 376 New registrations last year the best-selling electric car in Germany, repeating a class below. The chances of this are not bad, especially since Renault has already done some of the work, so to speak. Because the new R5 could build on the platform of the Dacia Spring. So there is definitely hope that Renault will fill this segment with a little more zest for life than the current Twingo can.
