Memory modules from the manufacturer G.Skill are very popular with many modders, and in the community you can also find many systems that are equipped with memory from the TridentZ series. We have a 32 – GB kit of the Trident Z Neo series picked up from the shelf and chased it through our test course.

G.Skill is a manufacturer that has been in the memory segment for years. The Trident Z Neo series has been specially designed for Ryzen CPUs, but this memory also runs without problems with an Intel CPU. In addition to the Trident Z modules, which are available in a wide variety of designs, G.Skill also offers the Flare X, Ripjaws, Forties and the SniperX series.

The Trident Z Neo RGB modules tested by us are offered in a wide variety of kit sizes. In our test the kit comes with 34 GB (2 x 16 GB) and 3. 600 MHz is used. But there are also various other kits available in the different capacity and timing levels. The offer ranges from 16 GB up to 256 GB and covers clock rates of 2. 666 MHz to 3. 800 MHz and timings of CL 14 – 14 – 14 – 34 to CL 18 – 22 – 22 – 42 from.

Not only the optics are convincing from the start, the quality of the modules is also very good and must be behind no other Hide manufacturer. It’s not for nothing that G.Skill memory kits are very popular. The heatspreader of the modules is black / silver and the LED area running over the entire back is illuminated very beautifully and brightly by the LEDs below. The color gradients and transitions are very fluid and cleanly controlled.

SPD programming and technical properties

With the programs CPU-Z and Thaiphoon Burner you get very detailed information about the memory bar, which afterwards cannot be neglected for a possible overclocking. If you want to learn more about memory overclocking, you can get all the necessary information and tips from experienced users in the respective threads (Intel RAM OC thread + guides and tips or Ryzen RAM OC thread + possible limitations).

The modules available to us were subjected to extensive overclocking in this test. But first we took a look at the exact technical data of the bars with Thaiphoon Burner. Our bars are dual-rank DIMMs, which in this case contain 8 ICs on one side with 8 GBit (1 GB) each. The chips were manufactured by Samsung and they are B-dies in 20 nm. Overall, the SPD data and the Extreme Memory Profile (XMP) were properly programmed and stored.

Due to the total height of the modules from 44 mm it may be Before buying the memory module, it is advisable to check the compatibility with the existing CPU cooler. Should the CPU cooler reach over the RAM slots, this can lead to a conflict with the heat spreader of the RAM.

Lighting / software

The G.Skill Trident Z Neo RGB modules do not come with such unusual lighting as the recently tested ones Corsair Dominator Platinum bar, however, G.Skill doesn’t have to hide with its RGB lighting and, in conjunction with the aluminum heatspreader, the lighting is staged very well. The lighting can be easily adjusted using the software provided by G.Skill. You also have the option of synchronizing the RGB lighting with, for example, third-party software such as that from Razer.

The number of adjustable Effects is currently 13, which can then be adjusted according to personal preferences in terms of brightness and temperature. But it is also possible to completely deactivate the RGB lighting or to synchronize it with the music played on the computer. The color can be set individually for each of the 8 LEDs, provided the selected effect supports this. The changes to an effect are applied within a few seconds by clicking on “Apply”.
