Habeck: Avoiding carbon dioxide instead of technical CO2 storage
Source: Heise.de added 23rd Dec 2020Greens boss Robert Habeck thinks it is too early to rely on technologies for carbon capture and storage for climate protection. “It would be the wrong strategy now to rely on technologies like CCS without doing what is possible in other areas,” Habeck told the German press agency. “The great danger of a CCS debate is that it plays into the hands of all those who are not serious about a quick exit from the fossil record.” Instead, it must be about producing “radically less” carbon dioxide (CO 2) .
Curb global warming Research into ways to reduce CO 2 to save is “okay”, said Habeck – “because we cannot be sure that we will be able to achieve the goals with the means and methods so far in this decade.” Scientific ethical principles, such as the precautionary principle and retrievability, must be taken into account. “This excludes interventions in the earth’s cycles, such as fertilizing the oceans or sowing clouds by shooting the smallest particles into the atmosphere.” In addition to the capture and storage or use of CO 2 , such methods are also being discussed in order to contain global warming and its consequences.
