Chris Marquardt Sophia Zimmermann Photography has many faces. We can approach it from very different directions. For some, access via technology is easy, others see the matter more scientifically. In this article we are interested in the artistic-creative approach and especially in the tools that can help us to push our often so cerebral photography a little more into the stomach. In general: creative work is always playful work.

We find easily accessible tools for this in analog photography and there in areas that have not always been taken seriously. What are meant are the so-called toy cameras. In the meantime, despite – or perhaps because of – their lovable quirks, they have found a permanent place in the creative toolbox of many professional photographers.

Low-tech cameras Basically, a camera is “just” a dark box with a hole, some kind of closure and a piece of film or photo paper in it. It’s easy to forget, because modern digital cameras are extremely complex and crammed with countless functions that should make our work easier – actually, because with the many buttons and complex software, passion becomes a matter of the head. Time to free yourself from technology. The less you can set, the faster the carefree collecting of motifs replaces the struggle with menus, buttons and dials. See, aim at, print. Photography can be that simple. That we give up control is part of it the exercise.
