For those who do not have space for a workbench but need one, we show a construction proposal here. This workbench is practical and space-saving.

A few years ago I moved to Amsterdam, where small apartments are as common as boats and bicycles. Despite the lack of space, as a designer and maker I definitely needed a workbench. It is the sacred place where the mind, hands and tools unite in an unstoppable force! … or just a workplace with good, even lighting.

I decided to design and build my workbench for the new apartment myself. The concept: simple design, simple construction, uniform lighting, suitable for tool storage and with a possibility to hide the chaos when the workbench is not in use. In the following text I will briefly explain the construction.

The plans are largely self-explanatory – it is important to mention, however, that with our measurements the side walls of the workbench enclose the table top and the rear wall. The part of the structure that needs the most guidance is the supporting substructure that holds the table top and legs together. I came up with a sandwich design for this, in which several plywood segments are glued together, so that a stable frame construction is created that also offers a seamless mount for the legs.
