But for some applications even the fastest SD cards are too slow, for example for continuous shooting with professional cameras.

This is where CFexpress comes in. This memory card format uses PCI Express 3.0 and the NVMe protocol, which has also proven itself with PCIe SSDs. The current version CFexpress 2.0 uses NVMe 1.3, while version 1.0 still relies on 1.2. The PCIe 4.0 interface, which is twice as fast, will certainly be an issue in an upcoming CFexpress version, but PCIe 3.0 speed is still sufficient.

An important point in CFexpress 2.0 was the introduction of new designs. While version 1.0 specified only one type, version 2.0 added two more: In addition to type B with 29, 8 mm × 38, 5 mm floor space there are now smaller type A cards (20 mm × 28 mm) and larger of type C (54, 4 mm × 74,1 mm). The cards don’t just differ in size: Type A cards only use one PCIe lane, Type B cards two and Type C works with four lanes, i.e. exactly as many as M.2 SSDs.
