Electricity vs. fuel: who drives cheaper – VW e-Up or Up? Purchase Taxes Maintenance Depreciation Conclusion Table of cost comparisons Electric cars are cheaper to run than a comparable combustion engine, but not all of them have the significantly higher purchase price Compensate cases. In view of the high subsidies from taxpayers and manufacturers, this originally correct statement is becoming increasingly rare. This is shown by the example of VW Up. According to the price list, the basic version of the small car that has been available since the end 2011 is significantly cheaper than its electric version powered counterpart e-Up. In practice you can save money with the latter in many cases. While VW has been offering the Up in the relevant points unchanged since it was launched – apart from the mandatory model upgrade – the e-Up was ending 2019 two major changes. On the one hand, VW is now installing a significantly larger battery (32, 3 kWh net instead of 16, 4 kWh), on the other hand, the entry price fell by almost 1600 Euro around 22. 000 Euro. Thanks to reduced VAT, VW calls according to the price list (as of mid-September 2020) 21. 421 Euro for the VW e-Up in that of the basic version.

Opposite is the Up with gasoline engine and basic equipment for 13. 0 037 Euro or with equipment comparable to the basic e-Up for 13. 871 Euro. We show in which cases the electric version is still the more economical. We do not limit ourselves to the basic model, but also give numbers for the equipment variant VW e-Up Style (test).
