VW’s ID.3 should not cost more than a Golf TDI. We’ll show whether that’s right with a view to purchase and maintenance and whether the Golf Hybrid is an alternative.

Not only is it the brand’s first purely electric car model, it also competes internally with the best-selling Golf. However, the ID.3 does not only have to keep up with the purchase price. However, VW limited itself to this in the run-up to sales – the company repeatedly emphasized that the ID.3 will not be more expensive than a similarly equipped Golf TDI. But just as important is the question of which drive is cheaper after buying it. To do this, we compare the ID.3 with the eighth generation Golf – in the form of a gasoline, diesel and plug-in hybrids.

The ID.3 is the first vehicle to be based on the modular electrification kit (MEB), which Volkswagen uses, among other things, for the ID.4 and which is also available to the group brands. This differs fundamentally from the Golf 8, which uses the second generation of the modular transverse matrix (MQB evo). Compared to this, the MEB offers important advantages due to its focus on the electric drive, including the ratio of external size to the space available inside.

That makes the comparison between VW ID.3 and VW Golf difficult: With 4, 26 m and 4, 28 m are both models about the same length and with 1,81 m and 1, 79 m similarly wide, but the ID.3 offers much more space for passengers and luggage. Nevertheless, the electric model could eventually replace the Golf – with the e-Golf there is already a first victim. VW no longer offers the corresponding electric motorization in the Golf 8 due to the ID.3.
