The decision, from Fedora 33 Using Btrfs as the standard file system for the desktop versions caused a certain stir: Fedora sponsor Red Hat had the promising file system in its Enterprise Linux (RHEL) and instead relies on XFS supplemented by the storage management software Stratis. The choice in favor of Btrfs came from the community and should not be misinterpreted as a rethink at Red Hat. Red Hat developers again initiated the inclusion of Stratis 2.1 in Fedora 33.

Up to now, Btrfs could be selected for the system partition during the installation, but this had to be set up manually. That was cumbersome with the traditionally poor partitioner built into the Fedora installer. Fedora set up two subvolumes for the system partition ( / ) and user directories ( / home ) on our test computers and an Ext4 partition for / boot .

Apart from the subvolumes, Fedora does not yet use any of the Btrfs features like snapshots or compression. OpenSUSE has long since made progress, using Btrfs snapshots for a rollback function integrated in the Grub boot menu.
