In addition to the ubiquitous WLAN standard, wireless technologies such as Bluetooth Low Energy, GSM / GPRS and ZigBee are also used in IoT devices. Often proprietary protocols are also used in the ISM band with, for example 433 or 868 MHz used. This article gives an insight into an attack on an IoT device via the 433 – MHz standard.

The identification and recording of wirelessly transmitted data does not require expensive equipment, because Much of the radio signal processing can now be done using software. Such software-defined radios perform a large part of the signal processing on an ordinary computer.

The reception and recording of all radio signals of the IoT standards used are handled by inexpensive devices such as Nooelec’s NESDR SMArt v4 (from 31, 95 €), which is used for this article.
