Linux: Build Flatpak packages yourself Flatpak packages sealed off Collect information in the manifest This must be in the package Tie the package Keep up to date Article in c’t 1 / 2021 read Gone are the days when you had to put together a separate software package for each Linux distribution. In order to provide a self-written program for as many Linux variants as possible in their different versions, simply turn it into a Flatpak package. Many Linux systems – including Linux Mint – already have support for the package format. It can be quickly retrofitted to all others.

A Flatpak brings them with the libraries required for its operation and thus does not come into conflict with versions already available in the system. The Linux community is pushing the package format with support from RedHat, the Fedora team, and the Gnome Project. Build tools provided help with packaging self-written software.

In addition to the actual application, Flatpak packages contain all the components required to start the program – in addition to libraries, symbols and graphics. Only the Linux kernel is left out. This means that the packaged application runs on all distributions that support the Flatpak format. In return, the packages are slightly larger than their counterparts from the distribution’s package sources.
