heise + | Migratory bird photography: Good results with beginner equipment

Source: Heise.de added 22nd Oct 2020

Each year, huge flocks of birds commute between their northern breeding areas and warmer regions to winter. The distance between the summer and winter pitches is sometimes more than 10. 000 Kilometre. Some migratory birds appear and disappear rather inconspicuously, while some large bird species such as cranes and geese form huge flocks before heading south. They gather at rest areas and during the day look for fodder in harvested fields. The morning departure and the evening return are particularly impressive.

In March and April the white storks return from their winter quarters. You don’t travel in large swarms, but in small groups or individually. Many refer to their nesting places on buildings and masts in the middle of towns. The large white storks cannot therefore be overlooked. From their elevated positions, they do not perceive the people on the ground as a threat and are easy to photograph. They stay until the end of August to breed and raise their offspring.
