Creating special photos under cold and sometimes gloomy conditions is a huge challenge with addictive potential. The passionate landscape photographer Nicolas Alexander Otto knows that too. Due to the longer twilight times in winter, it is above all the special light that affects the way you take photos. The automatic systems for exposure and white balance aim for a neutral reproduction. While the exposure detects a medium gray even in bright snow, the color temperature slips into the warm reddish or cold bluish area. However, if you want to capture or reinforce the actual mood in your pictures, the photographer has to help manually – preferably when you take the picture on the camera and not later when processing the picture.

An important factor in winter photography is the weather. Anyone who is able to correctly read and interpret weather reports and satellite images will find the desired lighting mood much more frequently and reliably in the morning or at dusk in the evening and seldom venture out into the cold in vain.
